Course Description

  • In The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams tells of a supercomputer, Deep Thought, built to answer the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything. After 7.5 million years, the answer—famously—is “42.” The problem? No one actually knew the question.

Today’s AI tools can deliver answers just as effortlessly. But without thoughtful questioning, disciplinary context, and purpose, those answers often miss the mark. This virtual session is designed specifically for 4th–12th grade Science and Social Studies educators. It explores how to use AI not to replace thinking—but to elevate it.

Through the lens of disciplinary thinking, teachers will:

    * Explore the historical and cultural development of AI as a phenomenon relevant to both science and society.

    * Practice using frameworks like RISEN to design meaningful, content-rich prompts that align with inquiry-based instruction.

    * Engage with custom GPTs and other tools that support phenomenon-driven science learning and evidence-based social studies exploration.

Participants will leave with a ready-to-use custom GPT tool, example prompts, and strategies to ensure AI supports—not shortcuts—the deep thinking and questioning that define great Science and Social Studies instruction.
