Course Description

  • Diabetes Tier 2 training is for all staff that work with students with diabetes. The objective is to recognize Diabetes signs and symptoms and how to respond appropriately.  Staff will be trained to safely and effectively administer treatment while ensuring confidence and readiness by the staff. Following this training staff will connect with their School Nurse Consultant to complete the hands-on training.

Outcomes

By the end of this training, participants will:

  • Identify and Respond to Blood Sugar Fluctuations
  • Recognize the early signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and hyperglycemia (high blood sugar).
  • Take appropriate action based on district protocols and student-specific care plans.
  • Demonstrate Competence in Treatment Procedures
  • Correctly administer fast-acting carbohydrates for low blood sugar.
  • Follow the correct steps for insulin administration and high blood sugar management.
  • Safely use glucagon and other emergency interventions as needed.
  • Ensure Timely and Effective Emergency Response
  • Know when to escalate a situation and call 911.
  • Communicate effectively with emergency personnel, school nurses, and caregivers.
  • Apply district emergency procedures with confidence.
