Course Description

  • Participants will examine the WIDA (World-class Instructional Design and Assessment) Guiding Principles and how they frame ELD programming and approaches to teaching multilingual learners in DCSD. Participants will read the assigned book and engage in discussions about the reading as it relates to English learners.

  • Credit(s) and Type: 10 Hours Relicensure | English Language Development (ELD)

 

Target Audience

  • Certified Staff
  • Any licensed staff member pursuing state-required ELD relicensure credits

 

Timeline Overview

 

  • Date to complete course: May 21, 2021
  • Face to Face Meetings (virtual) -- Required to attend all three (see your choices):
    • Meeting #1: Opening Google Meet:Thursday, May 6 (7:00-7:20 AM) OR between 12:15 and 2:45 also on 5/6 (please let Mark know when you will be dropping in)
      • You will receive your book after you have attended one of the opening Google Meets
    • Meeting #2: Mid-Study Check-in Google Meet: Thursday, Thursday, May 13 (7:00-7:20 AM) OR between 8:30 and 1:00  also on 5/13 (please let Mark know when you will be dropping in)
    • Meeting #3: Closing Google Meet: Tuesday, May 18 (7:00-7:20 AM) OR between 8:30 and 1:00 also on 5/18 (please let Mark know when you will be dropping in)

 

Outcomes

Here are the outcomes for the course that participants will "walk away" with from the course:

 

  • Grounding in the Guiding Principles and how they frame ELD programming and approaches to teaching multilingual learners in DCSD;
  • "Key moves" to build students' learner operating systems to prepare them to become independent learners;
  • Tools for optimizing student engagement and deeper learning
