Jan 28, 2026 - Mar 1, 2026
Full course description
Course Description
-
Participants will learn how CVI impacts functional vision and access to learning, how to recognize early indicators, and when concerns should be referred to the vision department. The session will review eligibility criteria and processes for qualifying students for vision services, including the role of medical documentation, functional vision assessment, and educational impact.
The course will emphasize effective interdisciplinary collaboration, with a focus on aligning vision goals within the Individualized Education Program (IEP). Participants will explore how Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs), Occupational Therapists (OTs), Physical Therapists (PTs), and other team members can work together to support visual access across environments.
Practical strategies will be shared for implementing vision accommodations during instruction.

Course Outcomes
Here are the outcomes for the course:
- Identify Red Flags & Refer: Recognize the behavioral "early indicators" of CVI that manifest during motor tasks and determine when a formal referral to the Vision Department is clinically indicated.
- Navigate Eligibility: Articulate the criteria for vision services, including the specific intersection of medical documentation and the "educational impact" required for qualification.
- Draft Collaborative IEP Goals: Construct integrated IEP goals where vision, OT, and PT objectives are aligned rather than siloed, ensuring visual access is a prerequisite for motor success.
