Course Description
- This session will be an overview of the critical elements of Comprehensive Literacy for All in preparation for our guest speaker, Dr. Caroline Musselwhite, on October 31st. Participants will learn the characteristics of an Emergent Literacy Learner and the teaching strategies that are necessary to move that learner to a Conventional Literacy Learner.

Course Outcomes
Participants will:
- Be able to identify the factors for helping students with significant disabilities become literate
- Be able to use evidence-based strategies to skillfully teach emergent readers and writers the skills needed to become independent readers and writers: skills included are early writing instruction using the developmental writing scales, alphabetic and phonological awareness
- Be able to help students acquire conventional literacy skills of reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing, decoding, and spelling
- Make literacy instruction meaningful to ALL students in their everyday lives
